Strabraggan National School
Strabraggan National School is a co-educational primary school under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise. It is located near the shores of Lough Allen in north Co. Roscommon in the Republic of Ireland. Currently, there are three teachers full-time and one part-time and one special education support and forty pupils who are taught in two multi-grade classrooms.
Ireland being an island and surrounded by water makes this project very important to our population. We understand the vital need to protect the water we have and to be mindful of how we use it. We would like to take part in this project to highlight to our students, their parents and the wider community of our school the need for conservation of our water and the generation of knowledge about our water systems. Further to this, we feel that it is important to highlight the existence of pollution within our water systems and how our actions directly affect the water we consume. We are working on a national green school environmental project to cover all aspects of protecting our planet and as our school is located on the shores of Lough Allen we want to work with our European partners to find ways and means to protect our water systems and the plants and animals that are supported by our lake. Further to this, the project will bring a lot of curriculum subjects together, so our students can see that everything is closely linked such as geography and environmental studies, biology and ecology, history of our waterways, in association with art, computer applications and communications. Within the staff of Strabraggan National School, there are many kinds of educational expertise and experiences. Further to this these key members of staff have undertaken a previous Comenius school partnership whereby they undertook activities associated with the project such as digital communications, multi-media creation and presentation, the hosting of delegates from our European partners and the integration of European pupils into the Irish school environment.
